Macau Online Gambling Law

Recently a conference was held in Macau where online gambling’s legality was discussed as well as other gambling related things. An assessment done on the above issue thought that the region had no particular online gambling law which is a concern since no regulation could lead to illegal gambling increasing in Macau.

Duarte Chagas, legal advisor to Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau stated “Although there is legal online gaming in MSAR, there is no special law on this issue”. He is of the view that it can lead to a confusing situation. Last year a DICJ official said that the Macau government was “studying the feasibility of drafting a law for regulating online gambling… no specific timetable for the enactment of the online gambling law is set as it is still in the preliminary drafting stage.”

Jose Mari Ponce, an admin authority of Cagayan Economic Zone based in the Phillippines, stated that when regulating online gambling both the players and investors should be protected. Unless and until this happens the Asian Continent’s potential would not be exploited fully. He also stated that he did not agree with the present outlook of treating online gambling as a competitor to traditional land based gambling. According to him, the online gambling has actually opened new venues to traditional gaming.

Magnus Grinneback, the Asia’s online gaming company Betson’s director further added that online gambling needs to be regulated and it was of no use stopping it as even the EU is also geared up towards the same issue.
